Aurora Central Catholic High School parent Laurel Beatty is conscious of the potential threat of cardiovascular disease in student athletes.
"You want your children to have the self-determination to contribute in sports, but in the rear of your mind is the thought something could happen," Beatty said.
Young person athlete deaths in latest years have given parents reason to think twice about their active health for their child and given school sports programs motivation to provide heart screenings for undetected heart conditions.
On Saturday, a steady flow of parents and student athletes on behalf of a cross-section of boys and girls sports around the area came to Aurora Central for heart screenings by the nonprofit Athletic Heart Metabolic & Cardiac Research Institute.
ACC’s athletic department supports the screenings as a preventive measure.
